About Me

             JANE B. BURKA, Ph.D.
I am a licensed California psychologist (PSY6410) specializing in individual psychotherapy with young adults, adults, and seniors. My private practice is located in North Oakland, California.

Education: I graduated from Wellesley College (B.A. 1968), Columbia University (Ph.D. 1978) and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (certificate in psychoanalysis, 1999).

Teaching: Teaching has kept me current. I have taught many courses in the Bay Area: at my home institute, the Psychoanalytic Institute of Norhern California in San Francisco (PINC: www.pincsf.org); at The Wright Institute (wi.edu) and The Psychotherapy Institute (www.tpi-berkeley.org) in Berkeley; for the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (www.ncspp.org) in Berkeley and Palo Alto; and to private consultation groups in Berkeley and San Francisco.

Supervision and Consultation:
I have been a Personal and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California since 2004 and was twice elected to represent Personal and Supervising Analysts on the PINC board. I have supervised interns at Access Institute in San Francisco and at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. In private practice, I offer consultation to licensed clinicians. I have given many presentations and workshops on clinical supervision through the Extension Division of U. C. Berkeley and at national conferences.

Professional Presentations:
Along with my co-author Lenora Yuen, I have given lots of talks and workshops on Overcoming Procrastination in business settings (e.g. Levi Straus, Alta Bates Hospital) and in educational settings (e.g. Stanford University, Reed College). As a psychoanalyst, I have presented at national and international conferences on subjects such as the therapist's body as an intersubjective co-creation, group dynamics in teaching, ethical violations, moral pluralism and moral complexity, and writing to metabolize trauma.
